Circuit Description
The first stage centers around timer U1, which is configured as an astable multivibrator operating at a very low frequency. Resistor R1, resistor R2, and capacitor C2 govern the primary timing cycle of this oscillator. As C2 charges and discharges, the output at pin 3 of U1 switches between high and low states, creating a slow square wave. Diode D1 works in conjunction with R2 to create an asymmetric charge and discharge path, which shapes the rise and fall times of the modulation signal to mimic the characteristic wail of an emergency siren.
The slow square-wave output from U1 passes through resistor R3 and charges/discharges capacitor C3. This filtering network smooths the square wave into a gently rising and falling ramp voltage. This triangular envelope voltage is then applied to the base of transistor Q1, a BC557 PNP transistor configured as an emitter follower or level shifter. Resistor R4 acts as the collector load for Q1, helping translate the voltage swing.
The resulting smooth control envelope from the transistor stage is fed directly into the control voltage pin (pin 5) of the second timer, U2 via R5. Timer U2 is configured as an audio oscillator, with its frequency determined by resistor R6, resistor R7, and capacitor C4. Because the voltage on pin 5 of U2 is being continuously swept up and down by the modulation stage from U1, the internal threshold levels of U2 shift dynamically.
